Week of February 11, 2013
Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!!!
After three days out of school, sophomore students finally returned to review for their test on Macbeth on Tuesday, February 26, 2013.
Freshmen are continuing in their work on Great Expectations. We are now on the second stage of Pip's "great expectations." He has traveled to london to become a gentleman to win the hear of the beautiful, but cruel Estella.
Have a great vacation week. Upon return, sophomores will be working on "Raisin in the Sun" after their test on Macbeth. Freshmen will be continuing Pip's journey to adulthood and becoming a gentleman.

Happy Holidays!
Sophomore Honors are finishing up The Alchemist. Projects are due this Friday.
Sophomore C-1 classes have finished Of Mice and Men and were tested on it today. Their "George's Letter" assignment is due this Thursday.
Freshmen finished reading The Hobbit and will have their test on Wednesday.
In light of the tragedy in CT, I want to reassure parents that Waltham High School has a comprehensive set of procedures in order to ensure the safety of all students. Waltham High School practices fire drills and lockdowns in order for all students and staff to familiarize themselves with these procedures. The number of support staff available including school adjustment counselors, conflict resolution specialists, housemasters and the house system, guidance counselors, our SRO, and all of the teachers and staff from our specialty programs help create a personalized environment for our students. Our dedicated and caring teachers and staff members provide a safe and supportive school environment where students feel connected and safe. Surveys tell us that the vast majority of our students feel they have an adult at Waltham High School whom they can confide in. This is an embedded part of our school culture.
We here at Waltham take great pride in our community. Children are the most important part of any community, and Waltham is no different. As President Obama said to the nation last evening, it is our duty to all be parents to them. We must all nurture their creativity and curiousity, but most importantly, we must encourage them to be good citizens by modeling that behavior ourselves.

Week of November 5, 2012
It's Election Week! As we choose a new leader this Tuesday, remember that there is no school for students on this day.
Monday brings an extra credit opportunity for Sophomores. If students choose, they may present a eulogy to Beowulf in front of the class for the chance to replace their lowest quiz grade with this new grade. In addition, there will be a unit test on Beowulf on Thursday, November 8. This will complete our work on Beowulf.
Freshmen will be working on their comparison essays for Odysseus and Luke Skywalker. These essays will be due on Tuesday, November 13.
Hopefully your families were not affected too much by Hurricane Sandy. I briefly lost power, but that was it.

Happy Halloween!
This week, Sophomores will be finishing work on Beowulf. We will have our final quiz on Monday, October 29, and then we will review for our test on Thursday, November 1. Next week we will begin work on Of Mice and Men in C1 classes and The Alchemist in Honors.
Freshmen will be working on our essay comparing Odysseus and Luke Skywalker as heroes. The essay will be due next Monday, November 5.
A reminder that the first quarter closes on Friday, November 9.

Happy Columbus Day!
This week and next week are Parent Open House Nights. The first night is scheduled Thursday, October 11, from 7-9pm and the second night is Monday, October 15, 7-9pm. Please remember that these are NOT parent conference nights. These meetings are to learn about your children's teachers and their curriculum. If you wish to schedule a conference with your child's teacher, please contact the teacher directly.
This week, Sophomores are continuing their work with Beowulf. Honors level has moved forward in their reading and C-1 levels are handing in group essays today (10/9).
Freshmen will be presenting their Kamishibai projects on the Odyssey beginning today (10/9). They will be having a test this Friday, October 12 on the entire text of the Odyssey.
